Damascus, Oct. 21 (SANA) – President Bashar al-Assad and Mrs. Asma al-Assad accompanied President of Romania Traian Basescu and his Wife on a visit to the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus Tuesday morning.
They were received at the Mosque by Minister of Islamic Endowments (Waqf) Dr. Mohammad Abdul Sattar al-Sayyed.
Presidents al-Assad and Basescu and their Wives toured parts of the Mosque after listening to a briefing on its history and the periods it witnessed.
The Romanian President and his Wife expressed admiration of the historical Mosque and its architecture, describing it as an important landmark of civilization.
Presidents al-Assad and Basescu and their Wives headed later for St. Hanania Church where they toured it and were briefed on its history, with President Basescu and his Wife expressing satisfaction over visiting the historical church.
