DAMASCUS, ( SANA ) _ Head of the State Planning Commission Tayssir al-Radawi said Monday that the 10th 5-year adopts a participatory approach in formulating its objectives and gives the private sector significant role to contribute in attaining needs of the development in Syria and to actively be involved in the economic plans.
That came at opening of the first definition conference of the United Nations' Global Compact and launching the National Project on enhancing participation of the private sector and non-governmental organizations in achieving the overall growth that was held by the State Planning Commission and the United Nations Development Program.
" The 10th 5-year plan works for the Syrian private sector to become a regulated and rehabilitated institutional sector able to penetrate foreign markets to contribute in developmental process and achieve economic and social stability." Al-Radawi said.
For his part, Deputy Chairman of the UN Global Compact Talal Abu Ghazaleh talked about importance of this project to serve the society through partnership between government and non-governmental organizations, pointing out that this project is the fourth in the Arab world after Egypt, Jordan and the UAE and aims at the investment in the society and creating a market through the social services presented to the community.
In turn, Acting Resident Representative of United Nations Development Program Zina Ali Ahmad said: " The UNEP is seeking, through its projects and its partnership with the government, to strengthen the private sector's role in reducing poverty and achieving the goals of Millennium and providing jobs and goods and services at low prices,"
She pointed out that encouraging the private sector leads to comprehensive economic and social growth and that the Compact is the start of several coming projects within the framework of the social responsibility.
Manager of the project Moahhamd al-Agha spoke about goals of the project in promoting the participation of international companies and insisting on the citizenship issues .
He pointed out that the Compact, which will start at the end of this year, is based on the spirit of voluntary initiative by the private sector to form part of strategies and principles of business sector.
On the sidelines of the conference an agreement between the UNDP and Talal Abu Ghazaleh foundation to support the business sector in Syria was inked .
A number of businessmen, industrialists, professionals, informational and scientific activities in addition to directors of departments in the State Planning Commission and the UNDP attended the conference.
