Syrian Rasha al-Sheikh Wins Bronze medal in Paralymic Beijing

Beijing, (SANA)- The Syrian athlete Rasha al-Sheikh won the Bronze Medal at the Powerlifting competition at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games on Saturday, September 13, following strong competition with the Egyptian Rania al-Morshidi.

Miss Rasha managed to make a lift of 117.5 kg to set the Bronze Medal, while Fu Taoying of China equaled the Paralympic record of 142.5kg and won the gold medal.  Not content with retaining her record, Fu made a fourth attempt at the same weight, smashing both the Paralympic and world records.

The silver medal went to Amoge Victoria Nneji of Nigeria, who lifted 132.5kg. The Medal won by the Syrian athlete Rasha is the first for Syria in the history of Syrian participations in the Paralympic Games which originally started in 1992 in Barcelona.
